JANET SUTHERLAND
BIO
Inspired by the work of artists such as Edward Hopper, Fairfield Porter and Rockwell Kent, Janet strives to depict the unique personality and spirit of New England. Her paintings exhibit a strong sense of light and atmosphere. Working primarily in oil, her style is characterized by bold, deliberate brushwork and color that convey her enjoyment of applying paint to canvas.
Born in 1953, Janet received a BFA from The Cooper Union School of Art, New York City and began her career as an illustrator for Macmillan and Crown Publishers. She presently makes her home in Ipswich, Massachusetts with her husband and fellow artist, Mike Dorsey.
She has been juried into the Oil Painters of America, the Rockport Art Association & Museum, and the North Shore Art Association. She regularly participates in juried plein air events around the country and has been the recipient of multiple awards. Her landscapes are in the collection of both U.S. and European art buyers.
