VARVARA AGEBEKOVA

BIO

I studied at the Academy of Art in St. Petersburg, one follows the traditions of the Russian classical school of paintings.

The work of these masters is characterized by a richness of color, a thick, generous application of paint with brushstrokes set in high relief, and a careful attention to visual composition.

It often happens that the sketches I use are not at all recent, the passage of time having allowed the captured mood to ferment to a larger, more imaginative conception.

Still-life is a unique genre, depending very much on concrete, tactile entities, yet at the same time far removed from the real world. They call for great flights of fantasy and, as such, attract me very much.

Also I am working on portraits and interior a lot, they all call for such attention to color.

I think that for the artist it is very important to reproduce a purely personal view of the surrounding world.  It is the hardest and the most interesting thing about our work.”
