Don stone

BIO

Don Stone was the mentor to many artists over his lifetime and created many beautiful works of art.

Don was born in Iowa. He graduated from Gloucester High School and Vesper George School of Art. He was drafted into the Navy and served on a destroyer. While there he painted portraits of the officers and the ship. He returned to teach at Vesper George and the New England School of art and was a commercial artist and cartoonist.

On a trip to Monhegan Island he realized that he could spend the rest of his life painting the island and the people who lived there. He conducted painting workshops at his studio on Monhegan Island for 40 years.

Don was elected to full membership in the National Academy of Design, American Watercolor Society, American Society of Marine Artists, Salmagundi Club, and New England Watercolor Society. His work has been exhibited in museums including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Portland Museum of Art, and Cape Ann Museum.
