EMILY PINE

BIO

Emily Pine is a native northern Mainer born in1988. She spent her childhood summers visiting her grandmother in Georgetown and now makes her home in coastal Harpswell. She has always been fascinated with the ocean. The ever changing colors, movement and the large sky views filled with wonderful shapes of clouds captivate her. “I’m drawn to hot brilliant colors against cooler duller tones. It’s part of my attraction to sunrise and sunset. I can’t stop painting it!” She paints in a small corner of the house on an old Singer sewing machine cabinet that belonged to her grandmother. It brings her to a simpler time and helps her connect with those feelings that budded as a young girl and have continued to grow through adulthood. A colorist at heart, she used the palette knife to create her vibrant oil paintings. Pine loves the feeling as the paint builds up and moves like frosting across the canvas.

Surprises always happen with the palette knife. On thick layers of paint, the knife doesn’t always deposit new color, it sometimes exposes colors underneath. It’s a totally creative process every time. You never know quite what will happen with each stroke, so I’m constantly reacting to what’s developing on the canvas. I find the whole process stimulating and invigorating.”
